Art and Your Mental Health

April, 13, 2020

As we navigate these unprecendeted times, experts say one way to help our under-stimulated, overstressed minds is to engage in art. Create some type of art, whether it's  "pottery to go", writing in a journal, coloring or dancing around the kitchen with the music blaring. Artistic expression can be extremely helpful for our  mental health.

Grab a piece of paper and something to write with and just let your hand and mind guide you. Don't underestimate the power of doodling. It doesn't have to be pretty or make any sense. Whatever is illustrated on the paper is theraputic. When you are engaged, you think of nothing. Your mind clears itself. Engage youreslf for five minutes or five hours. Do it with a paint brush, a crayon, a marker - even a piece of chalk.

Mother's Day is fast approaching.

April, 14, 2020

Moms everyday need a pat on the back for always being there. Through the tears, the joy, the laughter and the heartache. Todays moms (and dads) have so much more to content with, more then the moms from "back in the day".

Kids aren't little kids, as long as they should be. Why not capture a little moment in time with this "Thanks for Helping Us Grow" sweater platter.

Whether your garden includes one hand print or four, we can all agree that this is the perfect Mother's Day gift. Hand print stems, hold up the finger print flowers, like Mom holds us up when we wilt.

Order your platter "to go". Comes complete with all the supplies; paint, plate, sponge, brush and instructions. We can even draw it out for you if you'd like.  Go to our KITCHEN to go page and order yours today.

Sample Sale

April, 23, 2020

Being closed is the perfect opportunity to tear the studio apart and organize, and that's just what we're doing. Yes, it's an art studio and art studios have samples - BUT  good lord, the samples were hidden in ever nook and crannie, that we don't even have. If you could only see the studio now. Completely amiss. I started the process of taking pictures of each piece we need to sell. So far I've posted hundreds and I have hundreds to go. They are cheap cheap prices - go to our facebook page and check them out: https://www.facebook.com/SouthShorePotteryShop. Like us while you are there, so you will see the new ones, yet to be posted.

Art Journaling and Mental Health

October 14,  2020

As we navigate these unprecendeted times, experts say one way to help our under-stimulated, overstressed minds is to engage in art. Create some type of art, whether it's "pottery to go", writing in a journal, coloring or dancing around the kitchen with the music blaring. I started journaling years ago with a book, I highly recommend. It's call Create Your Life Book, illustarted by Tamara Laporte. It presents 18 step-by-step mixed-media drawing and painting projects that encourage self-fulfillment through the creative process. Creative Journaling was another book I turned to for inspiration. So many great techniques to learn and be inspired by are included included by this author, Renee Day.  When I'm having one of those "blocked moments" I refer back to this amazing book. It teaches you to take your thoughts and feelings and make art with them.  Creative Journaling recommends the simplest of medias - dot grid journals, watercolors, brayers, acrylic paint, markers, Starting with a good mixed media paper, I think is key. My personal favorite is Canson XL Series.

Twice a month we get together with the 12-18 year olds to have some fun with Art Journaling. See our upcoming schedule. Everyone should journal in some shape or form, especially during 2020!
